1 (1) William Nosworthy and Susanna Stancombe, 6 May 1804, by banns in the parish church. Witness was William Stancombe.

(2) One year earlier there was another marriage of a William Nosworthy to a Susanna Stancombe: William Nosworthy of this parish and Susanna Stancombe of this parish married by licence, fifteenth day of May 1803 by John Rendle. Both made their mark in the presence of Richard Brooking and John Tremills.

It is now believed that there were two William Nosworthy's who married two Susanna Stancombe's. William Nosworthy, (widower of Ann Cleave), married Susannah Stancombe (widow of Isaac Stancombe; maiden name, Hamlyn), and William Nosworthy, son of William Nosworthy and Ann Cleave, married Susannah Stancombe, daughter of Isaac and Susannah Stancombe. Unfortunately, to date, there is no way of knowing which couple married first. At this point in time, because a child was baptised to one of these couples before the second marriage, and because we can only assume the younger couple had the children, the second marriage will be documented as belonging to the older couple.

39 James Nessworthy, age 21, bachelor, residing at 40 Wellington St., a baker, son of Robert Nessworthy, boat builder, married Ellen Clark, age 20, spinster, residing at 8 Eastborne ?, daughter of Thomas Clarke, a fitter. They were married on 25 December 1895 at St. Aiden's Parish Church, South Shields, Durham. Both signed the register as did the witnesses, Elizabeth Nesworthy and Robert Ainsley.

(1) One would make the assumption that the witness, Elizabeth Nessworthy, was James' mother. Nevertheless, the presence of Robert Ainsley as the other witness might change that. There was a marriage between Robert Ainsley and Elizabeth Nesworthy in 1896; this Elizabeth most likely being James' sister, based on the 1901 census. Therefore, the witness might have been James' sister and her intended husband, rather than his mother.
Family: F7073

The marriage was solemnized at the Parish Church of Staverton, in the county of Devon, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, by me, William Marten, Vicar, on 11 February, 1841. Witnesses: Edward Shepherd made his mark; possibly "Sr" after it. The second witness signed his name, Edward Shepherd; possibly "Jr" after his name, but it is very unclear. Family: F7020

42 Marriage Certificate: 27 May 1878, Matthew Nessworthy, of full age, bachelor, mariner, living at 73 Dale St., South Shields, father: Matthew Nessworthy, mariner, married Elizabeth Morrison, of full age, spinster, living at 73 Dale St., South Shields, father: Alexander, master mariner. They were married at the Parish Church of Westoe. Witnesses: William H[illeg.], June C[illeg.]

(1) It is interesting to note the status of "spinster" for Elizabeth on this document in light of her first marriage and subsequent child.
Family: F7030

43 Marriage entry states: Thomas Nosworthy of the parish of Staverton and Grace Palk, both sojourners in this parish, were married in this church by banns this second day of August in the year one thousand eight hundred and eight, by me Matthew Lowndes, Vicar. In the presence of (the mark of ) Agnes Foot? and Robert Webber. Grace could not sign the register and made her mark.

Although Thomas' parents are not named on the marriage record, he is believed to be Thomas, son of William Nosworthy and Ann Cleave, for the following reasons:

(1) The Staverton parish records demonstrate that Thomas was not baptized in that parish. The children of Thomas and Grace are the first Nosworthy baptisms in the parish after a lapse of many, many years.

(2) Widecombe is only 8 miles from Staverton.

(3) Thomas and Grace named their second child, Ambrose, who was born ca 1811, and Thomas' own brother, Ambrose had just died at the age of 25 in 1810.

(4) There is a burial of a Thomas Nosworthy, in Widecombe, 06 January, 1839, whose abode was Staverton, age 62; although a couple of years out, this also supports the liklihood that this is the Thomas who married Grace. (original burial records)
