Simpson A pictorial record of the day
After four years of study Richard gained his joint honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Ancient History and English at the University of Wales, Lampeter. Set in a small mid Wales town amongst rolling hills, valleys and forests, the University was founded (as St David's College) by Bishop Burgess in 1822 to provide a Liberal education for the welsh clergy. It became a part of the University of Wales in 1972.
The day proved hot and sunny, interspersed with occasional heavy showers of rain. Excited graduands were gathered together to be robed and schooled in the order of events. The Congregation of the University was held in the Arts Hall and the proceedings were divided into three award ceremonies. Richard's was in the first. In the main hall, graduands were seated on the left of the aisle while their delighted parents watched proceedings from the right. In turn they were called by name onto the stage. Degrees were presented by the Vice Chancellor, Dr Medwin Hughes.
Each University, faculty and degree has its own prescribed form of academic dress. At the University of Wales, Lampeter, graduates wear a black stuff gown with bell sleeves for the Bachelors' degree. The Bachelor's hood is of the Oxford form and the colour for the Arts faculty is mazarin blue shot with green. Bachelors wear an ordinary square cap.
