Enlisting as a gunner in the Royal Artillery, he became a "shoeing smith" (farrier) and served in China and India. He was awarded the China Medal for action at the Taku Forts, Tientsin, China. This document is a record of a Regimental Board convened in respect of his discharge from service.
Page 1:
The Board sat at Rawalpindi, India on November 7th 1866
He had a total of 11 years and 239 days service including 4 years 91 days abroad. He was being discharged on the grounds of ill health. He was noted to be of good character with no service defaults. He had been awarded the China Medal for his part in the action at Taku Forts (China Opium Wars)
Page 2.
Previous service of 6 years 290 days with the Royal Marine Artillery was noted. He was listed as a gunner in January 1862 and promoted to Shoeing smith in July 1863.
Page 3.
The cause of his disability was recorded as Hypertrophia Cordis (enlargement of the heart) This was said to be progressive and due to much fever and sickness in a variety of climates.
