The primary objective of genealogical research is to identify all the ancestors and descendants in a particular family tree and to collect personal data on them. As a minimum, this data set includes the individual's name and the date/location of birth, marriage, and death. In order to support research by other genealogists, this data is often published on internet genealogy websites such as this one.
Throughout our ongoing researches much personal information may have been collected about you and your family from a variety of sources. The privacy of this information is important to us and this privacy policy has been devised for the Extended Craxford Family Genealogy website with that in mind and for your reassurance.
We would all prefer not to have to worry about our personal data but these days we must use caution to prevent misuse of information. Identity theft and credit fraud are the worst problems. There is concern in some quarters that information distributed to distant relatives or put onto a genealogy website makes it easier for unscrupulous individuals to commit invasions of privacy or other frauds. However, the personal information that the identity thieves and credit fraud perpetrators want (full names, social security numbers, dates and places of birth, current occupation/employment data, and bank/credit card account numbers, PIN numbers and passwords) is much more detailed than that which we would hold here. One or two facts alone (your name and/or your mother’s maiden name) are not enough information to cause damage.
Many genealogy programs can suppress the name of a living individual and substitute “living" or “still living" in its place and this website is designed to do just that. If you are aware that someone is living and their name is shown here, please let us know, so that we can remedy the situation.
Note: Only a registered member who has a login account and who has actively logged in to the site will be able to view living individual information.
Photographs of living individuals in the database and on the personal information pages are considered personal data and are normally suppressed. However, if the individual so chooses, a photograph can be tagged as “always visible.” Photographs used in the magazine articles are dealt with under individual arrangements. Before any photograph can be included in this website, permission is obtained from the owner of a photograph. Permission is also obtained from living individuals in a photograph if,
To ensure the privacy of living individuals, the Extended Craxford Family Genealogy website will always suppress the personal data of individuals known to be living from viewing by the general public. Personal data includes, but is not limited to, birth/marriage dates/locations, photographs, notes, and biographical. Articles in the magazine sections are dealt with by separate arrangement.
Note: If a relative does not want their personal data to reside in a website server database in spite of password protection, that individual and linked descendants cannot be accommodated by the security program. They will be reluctantly rendered anonymous within the website. However it has to be pointed out that the presence of their ancestors and siblings is already a matter of "common knowledge" in freely available official databases in many jurisdictions.
Registration and Personal Data Access
Access to the normally suppressed personal data of "the living" is restricted to registered members of the web site who must also login to the site with their user name and password. The access will be restricted to their own family tree.
Potential members must first read with this Privacy Policy and agree the stated Terms of Use. To apply for membership follow the link in the Left Hand Navigation bar on any of the magazine pages and complete the registration form for a user account. When registering, you must indicate how you are related to the family. If this is not stated or you are not related, you will not be granted access.
With registration, you will be granted access to your unique family tree within our database. Once logged on you will be able to "see" the living and can make limited downloadable GEDCOM genealogy files from your descendents.
For security and consistencey of data management, the database is populated - and new records added or modifed - offline. There is no facility to add or influence the contained information to the website directly on line. New records, details of modifications and corrections, documents and photographs should be sent for processing to the administrators by email.
Original data given to us in trust (personal information, e-mail/street addresses, phone numbers, etc.) is not provided to others unless your approval is first obtained. You should be aware, however, that most of this information is public domain and may be readily available to others using internet search engines (e.g., Yahoo People Search, Google.com, Birthday.com).
