Hello! Thank you for the information on the market town of Whittlesey. My mother's maiden name is Whittlesey. My ancestors left the area in the early part of the 17th Century. I would like to better understand their emigration and hope to one day visit Whittlesey, England. It is interesting that the drainage of the fens was possibly in the time period of my family's departure. I wonder how this may have impacted their decision. Thanks again for sharing the information on your family site.

I'm Eric Ginn spoken about in the blitz. Still alive and well! After surviving the bombing and with my father severely injured
his friend took us home to Chesham away from everything where he and his lovely wife raised me from 1941 to 1945. Then I returned to London to my father who had remarried.

[The account of the bombing is in the article which can be found in the PURPLE pages at: "PADDINGTON GREENS": PART 2 THE SHARDALOW INHERITANCE. - Ed]

Hey Craxford family!
I recently was given part of a set of Charles Spurgeon's sermons from a Reformed minister in Dunedin, who is now moving to preach in Pukekohe. He received the books from a previous minister there, who preached in the same church in the mid-80s. His name was C.A.R. Larsen. It's believed that he purchased these volumes (9 in total) from a second-hand bookstore in Dunedin. I was researching the names that appeared in the beginning of the book, and found the following comment in two or three of the volumes:

Presented to Mr. Geo. D. Cox, with best wishes, from Mrs. C. H. Spurgeon.
-dated to 1875, 1876, and I think 1877 as well.

So I jumped online and found this website! I believe that these volumes were given to George David Cox, who passed away in Lincoln, Canterbury, NZ, in 1929, and the books somehow travelled south and ended up in a bookstore in Dunedin. Maybe a book dealer purchased the books from the Cox family after the death of George?

Just wanted to say thanks for the very informative article, and I hope this information is of some use to you!

Cheers from NZ,
Alex

[It's a bit "pot luck" finding old photos of specific areas of Leicester. You could try The Leicester Mercury archives or the book The Slums of Leicester by Ned Newitt. The My Leicestershire History on the University of Leicester website has a large collection of photographs by Dennis Calow - two of which are of Dannett Street - Ed]

Hi Andrew, I have a query that I'm hoping you can help with please.
The Liverpool press printed Eagle but also TV21 on its new gravure process. Before the adaptions for the Eagle what process were the Annuals printed on. The majority are in B/W with little colour and thick paper. I'm also trying to find out how the artwork was transferred to the printing plate. Can you help please.

smile Do you have contact details for Thelma Craxford. Our parents were friends and we were neighbours when we were kids in Bath. We used to play together during the war!
