LEFT: This detailed view taken from the Charles Booth's Descriptive Maps of London Poverty (East and West) shows the area around the Pentonville Road in 1889. Suffolk Street lies just to the west of the central join between Chapel Street and White Lion Street. Also noted to the north are Copenhagen Street and Pulteney Street mentioned in the main article.

of me JAMES CRAXFORD of No 8. Suffolk Place Pentonville in the county of Middlesex
Greengrocer made this fourth day of October one thousand eight hundred and eighty I give
and bequeath all the estate effects and property which shall belong to me at the time of
my decease to my dear wife Frances Alice absolutely And I appoint her to be the sole
EXECUTRIX of this my will AS WITNESS my hand the day and year aforesaid - JAMES
CRAXFORD - SIGNED by the Testator as his last will and testament in the presence
of us present at the same time who in his presence at his request and in the presence of

BE IT KNOWN that Albert Craxford
of 33 Wilberforce Road Finsbury Park
in the county of Middlesex
died there on the 2nd day of November 1929
intestate a widower leaving Albert Oswald
Craxford and Raymond Alexander Craxford
his lawful children and only persons
entitled to his estate who are now minors
That Frances Alice Craxford widow the
lawful grandmother and only nearest of
kin of the said minors has renounced guardianship of the said minors

AND BE IT FURTHER KNOWN that at the date hereunder written
Letters of Administration of all the Estate which by law devolves to and vests
in the personal representative of the intestate were granted by His
Majesty's High Court of Justice at the Principal Probate Registry thereof to
Henry Craxford of Kentmere The Mall

THIS IS THE LAST WILL of me Henry Craxford of
"Kentmere" The Mall Old Southgate in the county of Middlesex
Gentlemam of which I appoint my friend Frederick Wadley
of "Birch Cottage" 125 Boundary Road Wallington in the county
of Surrey wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Salesman my wife
Elizabeth Rachel Craxford and my friend George
William Crabb of 98 Jerningham Road New Cross in the
county of London Salesman Executors and Trustees
I give to each of my said Executors and Trustees the
sum of Fifty pounds free of legacy duty as a small
acknowledgement for the time and trouble they might
incur in and about the execution of the trusts of my
said Estate I request and authorise my Executors
and Trustees to carry on the business of a Fruiterer
and Greengrocer now carried on by me at Nos 73, 97
and 99 High Road Wood Green in the said county of
Middlesex and elsewhere and to use and employ therein
all such parts of my Estate as they may think necessary
for that purpose and without in any way having
responsibility for any loss that may arise thereby my
said Executors and Trustees also being at liberty to
emply all such assistance in the carrying on of the
said business as they may think expedient and so as
not to necessitate their personal attendance or
supervision and to pay the net profits or other income
arising therefrom to my said wife for her life and
upon her decease then I direct that such business
shall be sold by my said Executors and Trustees
and the net proceeds thereof shall fall into and form
part of my Residuary Estate. If my said wife should
desire to sell the business or any part thereof at any
time then I direct my said Executors and Trustees
to sell the same and the net proceeds arising from
such sale shall fall into and form part of my said
Residuary Estate. Subject to the payment of all my

just debts funeral and testamentary expenses and the
aforesaid Legacies with the duty thereon I give devise
and bequeath all other my Estate both real and
personal unto my said Executors and Trustees upon
trust to sell and convert into money all such parts
thereof as shall not consis of money (except the
premises whereon my said business is carried on)
and to stand possessed of the net proceeds arising
from such sale Upon trust to invest the same upon
any securities that my said Executors and Trustees
might think proper and then to stand possessed of
the net income arising therefrom Upon trust to pay
such income to my wife for life And upon the decease
of my said wife then I give the whole of my Residuary
Estate unto my Executors and Trustees Upon
trust to see my said property upon which my said
business may then be carried on and to stand
possessed of the net proceeds thereof and of the
remainder of my Residuary Estate Upon trust to
pay and divide my Residuary Estate equally between
my three children namely Henry Joseph Craxford
Nora Craxford and Marjory Iris Craxford in equal
shares upon their respectively attaining the ages of
twenty one years but in the event of any of my said
children dying in the lifetime of my said wife
without leaving any lawful issue the I give the
whole of my Residuary Estate unto the
survivors or survivor absolutely But in the event
of any of my said children so dying aforesaid and
leaving lawful issue then I direct that such issue
on attaining twenty one years shall take the share
which their deceased parent would have taken if
living and if more than one equally and with the
same powers of advancement as are hereinafter
contianed with regard to my own children. I
empower my said Executors and Trustees with the
consent of my said wife to advance for the maintenance

education benefit or advancement in life of my said two
daughters Nora Craxford and Marjory Iris Craxford any
share of income to which they might become entitled
during their minority as my said Executors and
Trustees shall in their absolute discretion think fit
I revoke all wills heretofore made by me and declare
this to be my last will. In witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand this first day of March

The Will of John Frederick Mente

Part 1 of the will

The will Introduction

This is the last Will and Testament
of me John Frederick Mente of No. 4 Sheen Dale Richmond in the
County of Surrey Jeweller I give devise and bequeath unto my Executors
hereinafter named All my money securities for money goods chattels estate
and effects of what nature or kind soever and wheresoever the same shall
be situate after my decease Upon trust in the first place to pay there out all
my just debts and funeral and testamentary expenses and then to pay the
rest and residue to my brother Henry Mente at present residing at Adelaide
in South Australia together with my mourning ring & watch I give to

The will and deposition

each of my Executors the sum of ten pounds And I desire my Executors
to divide the furniture of my house No 4 Sheen Dale aforesaid among
the persons named in a list to be furnished by me to my Executors
previously to my decease And in the case of the decease of my said brother
Henry Mente my desire is that my executors shall have the sum of one
hundred pounds each for his own use and benefit and that they shall then
pay to James Craxford Junior of Suffolk Street Pentonville twenty five
pounds to Ann Craxford his sister twenty five pounds to Mrs Louisa
Hughes of White Conduit Fields twenty five pounds and after payment
of the above legacies I give the residue and remainder of my estate and
effects to Eliza Mente the wife of my brother Henry Mente and
I appoint my friend David Simpson of Hatton Garden Middlesex
Goldsmith and William Ker Reid Breams Buildings Chancery Lane
Goldsmith Executors of this my last Will and Testament Signed by me the
said John Frederick Mente this fourth day of July One Thousand eight
hundred and fifty - John Frederick Mente - signed and acknowledged
by the above named John Frederick Mente as and for his last Will and
Testament at the foot or end thereof in the presence of us present at the
same time who in this presence and in the presence of each other and at his
request have attested the same and subscribed our names as witnesses

same County Goldsmith who made oath that they are the Executors named in
the last Will and Testament of John Frederick Mente late of No 4 Sheen
Dale Richmond in the County of Surrey Jeweller deceased which said and
bears date the fourth day of July in the present year of Our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and fifty and is now hereto annexed And the
Deponents having now perused that part of the said WIll which is contained
in the words following namely "And I direct my Executors to divide the
furniture of my house at No 4 Sheen Dale aforesaid among the persons named
in a list to be furnished by me to my Executors previously to my decease"
they further made oath that the said deceased shortky after the date of this
said Will deliverd to these Deponents a paper writing of the tenor or purpose
mentioned in this said Will which is in the handwriting of the said deceased
and signed by him but which bears date subsequently to the said WIll
namely on the ninetweenth day of the said month of July in the present year
but which is not attested by any subscribed witnesses or witness And they
further made oath that they have since the oath of the said deceased
made careful search amongst all his papers of moment and concern and in
all his depositions but that no other paper writing whatever of the tone
or purpose as referred to by his said Will as aforesaid have been found in
them or hath at any time whatever come to their or other of their
hands possession or knowledge save the aforesaid Paper Writing bearing
date that said nineteenth day of July in the present year - David Simpson

Simpson and William Ker Reid were duly sworn to the truth of the afore
going Affidavit - Before Me - W Robinson Snr - Prebent - N R
