George preserved this menu as a memento of one of his trips away from the front line. We have reason to believe that the "Splendid Bar" was located in Cairo but there were many other similar establishments serving 'home from home' food and beer to the Allied servicemen in the towns and cities of Egypt in the early 1940s.

This very delicate artefact, the paper is so thin that the printing from the other side shines through, is a fascinating insight into the tastes of the time.

The Piastre

The Currency of Egypt was the Egyptian Pound which was divided into one hundred of the more commonly recognised piastres. Investigations have suggested an exchange rate of 97.5 piastres to one pound sterling. The piastre was signified by the letters P.T. piastre tarife'e or tariffed piastre. (2, 3)
