Presented by David Lovell
Leicester's Royal Opera House stood in Silver Street (between High Street and the market). It was designed by C.J. Phipps and opened in 1877. A wide variety of performances were staged there for 83 years until it was closed in June 1960 and subsequently demolished. A full history of the theatre can be found at arthurlloyd.co.uk: The Music Hall and Theatre History Website.
Reproduced here is a copy of the programme for the performances of "HMS Pinafore" and "Trial by Jury" by the Leicester Amateurs at the Royal Opera House, Leicester in March 1922. It places in context the photographs from George Cook's annotated album. Because of the smallness of the typeface, the individual pages have been scanned in a larger size and can be examined at leisure by clicking on the appropriate link. The Leicester Amateurs are still going strong although I have yet to perform with them; they now perform modern musicals and are currently rehearsing Sweet Charity for May 2008. My first G&S experiences were in the Newcastle University G&S Society's productions at the Tyne Theatre & Opera House and the Newcastle Playhouse in the late 1980s. Recent roles have been Lord Chancellor (2007), Robin Oakapple (2005), John Wellington Wells (2003), Ko-Ko (2001), Jack Point (2000), Earl of Mountararat (1999), Giuseppe (1998) with Leicester Operatic Players, Leicester Opera, Leicester G&S Society.
